In November 2016, I decided to try something new. For months, I had been following a company called Poshmark on Instagram, and I loved their posts on fashion and being a “PoshBoss.” And it wasn’t until November, when I finally decided to check it out, and realized it could potentially become a stream of income.

Poshmark is an app that allows you to list fashion items from your closet to sell to other “Poshers.” I had a few pants that no longer fit, some shoes that I was no longer wearing, and so I listed everything. I started out with just a few items, and shortly after, made my first sale—a pair of BCBG platform sandals that I purchased for $1 at a flea market but were still in great condition .

I began spending more time learning about the app and how to make more sales. I toyed with the idea of making this a full-time business but sales were slow to come. I even went to a couple of local thrift stores to find more inventory. A pair of Charter Club pants that I spent $5.99 on sold for $30; a NWT (new with tags) trendy statement necklace that I picked up on sale at Macy’s for $7.55 sold for $29. Of course, there are fees associated with selling on Poshmark (they keep 20% of the sale price), but it is well worth it.

In the process of expanding my store and getting to know more about reselling, I’ve found an incredible reselling community on social media that I had no idea existed. These are men and women who decided they wanted to work for themselves and have made a business reselling online—whether on Poshmark, eBay, Amazon, etc. And what has impressed me the most is how much they support each other and encourage newcomers like me to continue plowing the road ahead.

I’m not yet sure where this road will lead, but in this process, I’ve learned a lot about myself and on being an entrepreneur. It comes with its challenges but it’s definitely a lot of fun. And I’m willing to take on the challenges and continue going forward to grow my business.
